Sunehra Kal, SWM

Status : Ongoing

Location : Bangalore North Urban District

Supported By : ITC

The project involves implementation of SWM in Chikkajala, Doddajala and Kannamangala Gram Panchayats of Bangalore Urban Dist. In this project, Saahas works closely with the Gram Panchayats to provide IEC, capacity building and handholding support to establish solid waste management systems in the villages. The entire staff required to perform the collection and processing of waste is provided by the Panchayat. The operational cost of the SWM operations is met by user fee from the households and shops, and is also supplemented by funds mobilized by the Panchayat from other sources. With help of this intervention, 28,384 people have been sensitized on Solid waste management from three GPs and  78% of generated solid waste is being managed within the three GP. Door to door dry waste collection is being provided by the Panchayats to 7096 households in the three Gram Panchayats. Saahas project coordinator and Supervisor have bagged award from former Minister Mr. Krishna Byregowda for excellence in setting up solid waste management in Chikkajala Gram panchayat.

Key interventions under this project are:

  • 90% of source segregation achieved in the Panchayats
  • From April 2019 till March 2020, 309.36 tons of total waste collected from households & shops and diverted from landfills.
  • 36 tons of recyclable waste sent to recyclers;
  • Out of 7096 households in the project area 2792 HHs are processing wet waste on their own by home composting, lane composting, by feeding to cattle or by pit composting in gardens.
