Beyond the Broom : Green Waste Management

Location : 12 Villages in Ballari District

Supported By : Jindal Steel Works

The objective of the program, as the name suggests, is to look beyond street sweeping and to adopt a more holistic approach towards waste management. As part of the program, awareness is provided to the residents about the correct waste management practices and how individuals and communities can contribute in reducing the waste being dumped in the landfills.

The program involves collection of segregated wet and dry waste from over 20,000 households and shops in 12 villages. The storage space for the dry waste is provided by the Gram Panchayats. Daily collection of wet waste and weekly collection of dry waste is carried out by the collection staff. The recyclables are sorted and sent to recyclers. The non-recyclables are sent to cement factories for co-processing. Dry waste storage bags are given to each household and commercial establishment as part of this program. A dedicated awareness team is deployed to closely interact with the residents and bring about behavioural change.

The program has been successful in achieving more than 90% segregation levels in all the villages and the residents are excited by the change that the program is bringing in improving the cleanliness levels in the villages.
