Background:
Majuli is the largest river island in the world and the cultural hub of Assam. However, the fragile ecosystem is under threat because of poorly managed solid waste. There is practically no waste collection happening, source segregation levels are zero all the waste is dumped eventually landing in the river Brahmaputra, or being burnt.
Objectives:
Saahas has initiated a 3-year intervention to bring about behavior change, build capacities of the gram panchayat and taluk level authorities, handhold them in setting up proper collection, transportation, processing, and disposal processes, and enable responsible tourism.Over the course of 3 years, we will scale up to cover 2 taluks and ensure the diversion of 2000MT of waste from the landfill or water Body
