Background:

Beluguppa and Tagguparthy Gram Panchayats (GPs), located in Beluguppa Mandal of Anantapur District in Andhra Pradesh’s Rayalaseema region, are traditionally agricultural communities. However, shifting consumption patterns have led to a steady rise in plastic waste generation. Local governing bodies are finding it challenging to adapt and have yet to establish an effective waste management system.

Objectives:

• Strengthening Waste Collection Systems: Build the capacity of Gram Panchayat officials, elected representatives, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and waste collectors, to implement a scientific and systematic waste management system with a strong emphasis on operational efficiency and financial sustainability.
• Promoting Behavioural Change for Source Segregation: Raise community awareness on the importance of segregating waste at the source, while educating residents about the environmental and health hazards of dumping and burning waste—ultimately contributing to cleaner and healthier villages and towns.
