Background/Need

MDU University is home to approximately 6,000 students residing in university hostels and around 650 faculty houses. Together 20 hostel kitchens, 2 centralized canteens, and 10 kiosks generate approximately 1,200–1,400 kg of organic waste daily, which requires scientific and sustainable management. To address this,1.5 TPD (1500 KPD) decentralized biogas plant within the campus was proposed as part of MDU’s Integrated Solid Waste Management system. The organic waste will be scientifically processed to produce biogas, which will be utilized as a clean cooking fuel in nearby hostels—Kaveri, Narmada, Sabarmati, and Yamuna Girls Hostels, located within 200–400 meters of the proposed plant.

Objectives

  • Decentralized management of organic/kitchen waste.
  • Reduction in LPG consumption through biogas substitution.
  • Promotion of circularity and sustainable waste practices.

Advancement towards a Zero Waste Campus.
