Background/Need

Nearly 2,000 students residing in the VNRVJIET hostel generate approximately one metric tonne of food waste every day. At present, this food waste is mixed with other solid waste, leading to environmental pollution, increased landfill burden, and inefficient waste management practices. To address this issue, the installation of a one-tonne biogas plant within the hostel complex is proposed. The plant will convert daily food waste into clean biogas and nutrient-rich organic manure. This initiative will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize waste sent to landfills, and promote sustainable waste management. It will also serve as an eco-friendly model for the campus.

Objectives

  • The plant is intended not only to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, but also to serve as a Center of Excellence in Sustainable Waste Management
  • It will provide hands-on learning, practical exposure, and interdisciplinary research opportunities for engineering students—particularly in the fields of environmental engineering, energy systems, and climate change mitigation.
  • This will also create awareness and learning opportunities for thousands of primary and secondary school students.
