Women from SHGs in rural Jorhat
Background/Need and Objectives:
The project proposes to address women empowerment through their integration in the workforce and setting up of sustainable solid waste management (SWM) systems in rural Jorhat, where our initial survey findings show that there are no functional solid waste management systems, although infrastructure has been set up in some Gram Panchayats.
Through collective efforts of government agencies, NGOs, and local communities, it is possible to create women-run sustainable and effective waste management systems that address the unique challenges faced by rural Jorhat. Upskilling women-led SHGs to operate SWM systems can harness the potential of women as change agents in their communities.
This project includes customised module design, followed by training sessions on solid waste management, operations, data management, bookkeeping as well as financial literacy for women from 30 SHGs. From these training participants, 10% will be identified and trained as Master Trainers, so that knowledge dissemination on SWM can be scaled by the SHGs independently. We will also facilitate MoU signing between GPs and SHGs, to initiate implementation of sustainable solid waste management.
