Background/Need: Thiruvallur Gram Panchayats currently face serious waste management challenges: irregular collection, high levels of mixed waste disposal, and open dumping. Despite some infrastructure and land availability, usage remains minimal, and awareness is extremely low. With growing urban pressures and a significant migrant population, there is an urgent need to establish a structured, inclusive, and sustainable solid waste management system to protect public health and the environment.
Objectives:
- Build Capacity of local officials, staff, and waste workers for sustainable operations.
- Improve Waste Collection through route optimization and structured systems.
- Enhance Source Segregation through intensive IEC and door-to-door campaigns.
- Promote Circular Economy by enabling reuse, recycling, and 3R initiatives.
- Provide Infrastructure Support for dry and wet waste processing through MCC upgrades, composting, or biogas units.
