Background:
Bengaluru generates 5,000 to 6,000 tons of waste daily, with 15 to 20% of this comprising everyday items like clothing, furniture, electronics, bicycles, and household goods. These items are often discarded due to a lack of repair options, exacerbating the city's waste levels. The discarded waste ends up being dumped in open sites, lake beds and dump yards despite not having reached end of life causing environmental degradation and health issues by contaminating our water resources, air pollution due to burning, and soil pollution due to leaching of toxic waste into ground surfaces. There is a need to foster a culture of ‘Repair and Reuse’ versus ‘Use and Throw’ amongst communities to prevent the above. RRR Maadi seeks to address this by fostering a community-driven initiative for repairs, skill-building, and sustainable lifestyles.
This program aims to reduce waste generation and promote a circular economy by facilitating on-the-spot repairs and skill-building sessions, encouraging a culture of repair and reuse that extends product lifespans and reduces environmental footprints.
