Background:
Shimoga, also known as Shivamogga, is a district in Karnataka that has 7 Taluks and 271 Gram Panchayats. It has the highest waterfalls in India, the Jog Falls, and numerous other tourist places. It is also a cultural hub of Karnataka. It has a mix of urbanized and rural villages, and the waste collection and processing system needs to be improved by operationalizing the infrastructure that has been established by the state Government.
Objectives:
The objective of the Sada Suchitva Shimoga project is to set up 6 model Gram Panchayats and support 29 other GPs in setting up holistic SWM systems operated by SHGs. While a key objective is to ensure the diversion of waste from landfills by proper processing and waste reduction, another objective is to provide employment opportunities to the women who are part of SHGs. Prompting zero-waste events and reducing waste by setting up cutlery banks, and demonstrating it as a viable business opportunity for SHGs is also being attempted in this project.
