Majuli is the largest river island in the world and the cultural hub of Assam. However, the fragile ecosystem is under threat because of poorly managed solid waste. There is practically no waste collection happening, source segregation levels are zero all the waste is dumped eventually landing in the river Brahmaputra, or being burnt.

Objectives:

  • Implementation of practices related to waste reduction, source segregation and bring in behavior change in community towards waste,
  • Enhancing Knowledge and Capacity of different stakeholders,
  • Technical Support for setting up and operating Waste Processing Centers,
  • Minimizing landfills/ dumpsites through proper collection, transportation and disposal of source segregated waste,
  • Sustainable living - Promote concepts like home and community composting, use of bio enzymes, and sustainable menstrual practices,
  • Promotion of sustainable, low-waste and slow travel.
