Background:
Benniganahalli (ward 50) (18 blocks) is a residential and commercial area under east zone of BBMP, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. It is adjacent to K.R. Puram railway station, SMVT railway station and has two metro stations nearby. The ward is known for its mix of residential neighborhoods, commercial establishments, educational institutions and apartments. The ward is home to many low-income, middle-income, and high-income residents, contributing to its socio-economic diversity. A processing unit for dry waste is under construction. Despite the presence of infrastructure for waste collection, this ward faces challenges related to segregation at source, not having a scientific method to collect waste from residences, lack of ownership by residents of the area, resource recovery and the adoption of circular economy principles. This indicates a need for initiatives focused on encouraging segregation at source, enhancing resource recovery methods and promoting the principles of a circular economy within the ward. This change will highly benefit the input given to the dry waste processing unit which is under construction and aid in sustainability.
