Background:
Nuh is one of the 22 Districts in Haryana, and a neighbouring district of Gurgaon. Solid waste management in the villages of Nuh is almost non-existent and most of the waste gets dumped on the streets and burnt. The situation is similar in other Districts of Haryana as well. There is need to demonstrate sustainable and holistic models in the state which can act as lighthouses for rest of the villages.

Objectives:
Unnati is the program under which Saahas works towards improving the solid waste management systems in rural Haryana. The aim of the program in Rozka Gram Panchayat, covering approximately 1200 households, is to set up a decentralized solid waste management system in each Gram Panchayat

The aim of the Unnati program is to :

  • Increase the involvement of the community in waste management activities in the villages.
  • Prevent littering and improve the hygiene and cleanliness level in the selected villages. Improve visual cleanliness, eradication of black spots, and cleaner drains.
  • Maximize resource recovery from waste and significantly reduce the requirement for landfills.
  • Reduce pollution due to the prevention of dumping and burning.
  • Generation of income from user fees, recyclable dry waste, government schemes, and compost sales for economic viability.
  • Demonstrate a replicable and scalable solution by setting up a systematic collection and processing system
  • Provide dignified livelihood and improved work conditions for the sanitation staff.
  • Upgrading the existing infrastructure for Dry and Wet waste processing
