Items such as furniture, mattresses, books, toys, e-waste and footwear cannot be easily disposed of and take up precious space in our homes. Bulky Waste consists of solid waste generated by residential premises which, by virtue of its mass, shape, size or quantity is inconvenient to be accommodated in the daily door to door collection system provided by the municipal corporation. “Change Matters” is a project designed by Saahas to help citizens dispose of their bulky waste responsibly. Saahas is trying to build a model for collection of such difficult waste streams to help citizens and to divert such waste away from landfills.

Ideally there should be a formalised collection system available for bulky waste as well. But, this is not available in most places.
Common Situation
Usually such waste is found dumped on footpaths and other public places or burned causing environmental degradation.

The main problem we were facing was how to dispose of the waste with proper segregation. We could have dumped it all in the dustbin but we were not sure if it would go through proper segregation and recycling. The thought came after seeing so much garbage on the roads and I felt this should be rectified. All the waste is segregated and gone for recycling. Main part is that usable things are provided to the needy through NGOs. We approached Saahas NGO for this waste disposal and the team helped us to dispose and recycle the products properly. When I got Saahas NGO contact, they asked to gather all the items for pickup by scheduling a date. The service was good. They came to our premise, picked up all the items and gave a list with the quantity of each item. I felt the good items or the usable items distribution to NGO is the uniqueness of Saahas NGO. The service is important to the wellness of the society and environment and reusability.

Most residents of our layout had bulky waste and didn't know how to dispose of it. Rag pickers collect a few items which are only valuable items. There is no guarantee they will dispose of it properly. I got to know about Saahas bulky waste collection drive from Raju Saahas. We have worked with saahs for e-waste collection for many years.
